IN MEMORIAM: Transnational Corporations Review (TNCR) team deeply mourns passing of highly respected advisers Vincent Ostrom and recipient of Nobel Prize Lin Ostrom

Since the establishment of the TNCR in 2008, Vincent and Lin have contributed greatly to its publication, especially in the area of international and institutional studies. As Great Mentors, the Ostroms used to advise us that social and economic scientists must develop a greater number of tools for analyzing change, particularly that of institutions. Lin and Vincent Ostrom examined these changes in the context of the analysis of micro-and macro-institutions. Their understanding of institutional change helped to shape our thinking that any general theory cannot be developed until the processes of change in multiple specific settings are understood. In this Memoriam, the TNCR will continue to actively support studies that the Ostroms and their colleagues successfully launched and integrated what they learned from specific institutions into a more general theory for understanding institutional changes and development.

ELINOR OSTROM: 2009 NOBEL PRIZE IN ECONOMIC SCIENCES
2010 TNCR SPECIAL

In order to celebrate Elinor (Lin) Ostrom’s award of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences , along with the support from the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University and many other partners, Transnational Corporations Review (TNCR), a journal dedicated to providing economic and policy analysis of current issues related to transnational corporations, foreign direct investment, institutional innovation, and international development called for a special collection on the Ostroms’ research and application, especially, Lin’s institutional studies. This publication is a result of this special call. Since December 2009, we have received a large number of articles and papers from colleagues and senior students who are studying Lin’s academia and approaches from America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. With careful review and selection, this special publication mainly includes:

  • Lin’s Nobel lecture, along with the writing from the Nobel Foundation
  • research and analysis to Lin’s academics and approaches
  • application of Lin’s theory with a focus on institutional studies
  • special documents to introduce the Ostroms’ studies, and
  • significant activities with pictures and Vincent/Lin’s stories of life
