An Online Learning Certificate Program for Doing Business in Emerging Economies
1. Objective and Mission
Developed by Ottawa United Learning Academy (OULA) along with its Transnational Corporations Review (TNCR), this online certificate in Business and Innovation for Emerging Economies (BIEE) is an issue-driven learning program that covers topics in the fields of transnational business and economics, international management and development policy, and different forms of investment and innovation in emerging economies (particularly China). The program is administered at Ottawa (Canada) but is available for online studies to participants residing in any locations.
The aim of the program is to prepare and equip participants to recognize and address the structural and cultural challenges that exist in an emerging economic context. This is an equally relevant objective for participants coming from and/or living in both Eastern and Western cultures, as the focus is on providing solutions to these challenges where they exist in relation to other nations. The study of transnational corporations (TNCs) and foreign direct investment (FDI) will feature largely in the program, as this is a key source of innovation development for emerging economies.
Two of the courses focus on developing excellent research and communications skills, as equipping participants with the means to bridge gaps of communication and understanding across borders is another key objective of the program. As a result, a graduate of the Business and Innovation for Emerging Economies will be an ideal leader in global business development and management. By taking this program, participants will be aware of the existing issues in this area, will be able to present ideas and encourage flow of knowledge and expertise across regional and cultural divides, and will be able to present creative solutions to global business challenges.
2. Program Contents
· OULA-101 Writing in English (substituted by a course in Mandarin Chinese for those whose mother tongue is English). This course is aimed at increasing the communications skills of those with business and economics. It is for expertise to be able to prepare written reports and articles to a certain standard for purposes of publication and other forms of advanced correspondence in a business and economic related studies.
· OULA-102 Business Studies and Analysis Methods (how to present papers, how to reference them, how to do literature reviews). This course is a survey of methodology for statistical and social science research in the realm of economics and business studies, particularly business report writing and analysis. The course particularly focuses on standards of publication for a variety of corporate media and shows participants how to best present their ideas in these types of forums.
· OULA-103 Introduction to Emerging economies (connect to TNCR with own approaches).This is a survey course that will discuss the most pressing contemporary issues of emerging economies, including FDI, human resources, economic policy, etc. Participants will select a chosen area of interest and complete a 25-page study of economic conditions in that country from a business perspective.
· OULA-104 Introduction to Transnational Corporations. This course will function both as an introductory seminar on the type investment operations of TNCs and as a forum for discussing the most pressing issues affecting the economic status of TNCs today. Participants will focus on FDI, labour issues or issues of policy and governmental control.
· OULA-105 Introduction to Chinese Institutions, Economics and Culture. This course gives insight into business and cultural norms in China for those intended on understanding how to do business in that country. The workings of Chinese institutions are a large feature of this course, and Chinese culture is featured as a part of the wider understanding of the context for business practices in China.
· TNCR-106 Speaking in Mandarin (substituted by a course in Writing in English for those whose mother tongue is Chinese). This course is aimed at developing the general oral communications skills of those with business in China. It is also for economic expertise to be able to briefly talk in Mandarin and to a certain standard for purposes of communication and other forms of correspondence in a business.
3. Online Registration
Applications must be made electronically, while all supporting documents (university transcripts, letters of reference printed on letterhead) must be submitted to the OULA. To be considered eligible for admission to program, the applicant needs to have an undergraduate degree with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 (Second Class - Upper Division or equivalent) or a CGPA of 3.2/4.0 for the last two full-time academic years. The ideal preparation is an undergraduate degree in Business or Economics, including undergraduate courses in intermediate economic theory (micro and macro), development policy and other relevant disciplines.
4. Tuition and Fund Support
This certificate program can be completed within a five-year period. Each course is relatively independent with tuition for US$ 500. For those who complete all 6 courses, one of the course tuition will be refunded when granting the certificate. Acceptance into this Certificate program implies no additional financial commitment. In almost all cases, participants of this Certificate program will be receiving other means of fund support from their main program of graduate study, and they will pay tuition for the courses relevant to the advanced Certificate through this base program of graduate study as well. l Curriculum: 4 required courses; 2 electives (Point of Comparison: Graduate Diploma in European Integration Studies: Requirements: Students complete 2.5 credits of graduate coursework and take part in a non-credit seminar (EURR 5809). So, this is consistent with 5-6 half-credit courses.
6. Relevant Notes
l This program is created by the OULA with special instructors from the TNCR Panel and special participants from young professional who are interested in TNCR.
l The course OULA- 101 is designed for non-native speakers of English who are interested in advanced writing in English. The course OULA-106 is designed for non-native speakers of Chinese who are interested in Chinese institutions, economy and culture.
